Your friend is coming over, your life is ruined

Such an interesting article in Psychology Today about how we as people have the tendency to turn neutral facts into awful/dreadful/anxiety filled stories that affect how we live our lives.

For example something as benign as “My friend is coming over today” can be turned into “My friend is going to stay too long” and ultimately “My friends don’t respect me at all, they hate me and I hate them, I will never EVER make the mistake of inviting someone over again.”

The Psychology today article suggest that we ask ourselves these 4 questions to begin the turn around:

Here are Byron Katie’s four questions—questions to ask yourself when you recognize that you’re caught in the net of a stressful thought:

1. Is the thought true?

2. Am I absolutely sure that it’s true?

3. How do I feel when I think the thought?

4. Who would I be without the thought?
