Ah, the fourth of July. Some people, when midnight comes around, go around acting like this:
But for the rest of you patriots, here are a few awesome events taking place in the Salt Lake and Utah valleys this weekend.
What: Real Salt Lake game vs New England Revolution. Friday July 4, 8 pm. Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy. Tickets $25 and up
Why you should go: Still rolling on your World Cup adrenaline? What better way to whet your soccer appetite than by watching a game of America vs. America. Projected winner: America.
No really, why?: For a few brief moments this week, this picture below was the actual Wikipedia entry for “United States Secretary of Defense.” President Obama called Tim Howard later in the week to thank him for making America proud. Sports, yeah!
What: Stadium of Fire, Friday July 4, 8 pm. LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. Tickets $30 and up
Why you should go: This is the largest July Fourth celebration in the entire state of Utah.
No really, why?: Seriously, Provo does it big–celebrating the holiday not just on July 4th, but for weeks and weeks before and after. Laura Bush, for example, flew over and spoke at the BYU stadium for one of last weekend’s events. Friday’s featured guests will include six-time Grammy winner Carrie Underwood and the cast of the popular local TV show, Studio C.
What: Fantasy Con. Thursday July 3 through Saturday July 5. Salt Palace in downtown SLC. Tickets $20 and up
Why you should go: The guest list includes such high-power names like Elijah Wood and Sean Astin (Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings).
No really, why?: If the traditional July Fourth festivities aren’t your scene, or if you just want to try something else for a change, Fantasy Con may be right up your alley.
What: Bengt Washburn stand-up comedy show. Saturday July 5, 8 pm. Wiseguys Comedy Cafe, 2194 W 3500 S in West Valley City. Tickets $12
Why you should go: Bengt is a nationally-known comedian who has appeared on NPR, Conan O’Brien, and Comedy Central. He’s got a good case of the funnies.
No really, why?: He actually grew up Mormon in the Salt Lake City area. This background means that, unlike many stand-up comedians, Bengt keeps his act pretty wholesome and clean.
