How to handle homophobic comments in Sunday School | The Ask Angela Column

DEAR ANGELA:

What should I do when someone makes an extremely hate filled and homophobic comment in Sunday school? I don’t want to make a scene but there are visitors at church and I don’t want them thinking those terrible comments are shared beliefs.

-Appalled

DEAR APPALLED:

Raise your hand and say something. Sometimes we’re afraid to say difficult things at church or in spiritual settings – “what if it drives the spirit away?”  “What if it causes contention?” But the spirit accompanies and sustains us when we speak the truth with virtuous motivations.

Example:

“I’m uncomfortable with the previous comment. It made me feel like X when the scriptures, the Lord, and the Apostles have taught us Y. I know that [insert testimony].”

Maybe this will make other people mad. But, good people gotta speak up, ya know?

Hope this helps.

Love,

Angela
